The last aurochs died in 1627 in a forest near Warczwa, Poland. The species was the father of almost all modern domestic cattle and lived in the most parts of Eurasia and northern Africa.

German biologists, the Heck brothers, tried to create a race that at least looks like that impressive animal, which is playing roles in prehistoric cave carvings and Cesar’s Gallic War. The “Heck Cattle” is much smaller than the “original”, but supposedly it looks pretty much alike.

Yesterday we saw a family in a game reserve in the middle of Kiel. Even in the size they are now they are impressive. (They also have Bisons and the European version, Wisent. Those are even more impressive.)

This was the youngest member of the family, and somehow has the looks and hairstyle of a teenager…
